A strange ethnologist lands in Pernand-Vergelesses, a wine-producing village, to carry out a survey of its population. An easy-going and impertinent man, Tom Joad will then relentlessly criss-cross the village and meet all its inhabitants. Not only does he dwell upon questions of wine-making tradition as well as the ins and outs of village life, its fragile balance and what is in store for it, but also upon the imaginary, both personal and collective of the villagers. By doing so, the stranger who borrows his name from the Steinbeck character who won't accept fate will try to rebuild a now disappearing public space. The film tells the tale of his adventure.

The almost financial ruined gentleman Georges Dewalter spends several days in Biarritz before going off in the Hispano-Suiza, a luxe car which was a present from friends. George becomes the lover of Stéphane Oswill pretending he is wealthy. Then Stéphane spends the remaining funds with which the now desperate George hoped to rebuild his fortune in Senegal.

Clémence Alpharo, who, in order to get a permanent contract in the company that has just hired her, must push Henri Giffard, a sales representative at the end of his career, towards early retirement. But Giffard refuses. His work is the only thing that still gives meaning to his life. Caught between the prospect of a professional future that would allow her to escape her family history and the unexpected affection she feels for the salesman, Clémence must choose. A choice that will inexorably push Clémence and Henri to the limit.
